iRacing’s first 2026 release will include several new cars and tracks. One that will be getting a lot of attention is another upgrade and update to one of the most popular one-make series on the platform. Releasing on the sim as it nears its 2026 competition debut, the 992.2-spec Porsche 911 Cup will be out on iRacing with the Season 1 launch!
Introducing the Porsche 911 Cup (992.2)
The Porsche Cup is one of the longest-running single-make series in the world today. First emerging in the 1980s, the national and international series have evolved over the years to include various generations of Porsche 911s.
The 2nd-generation 992 Cup car builds on the already-successful 992’s platform that has been tearing up tracks around the world since 2021. It will be evolving alongside Porsche’s GT3 992, with aerodynamic overhauls as well as improvements all around to the engine, the braking, and quality-of-life improvements to electronics and driver aids that mean that you should be able to get even more out of the car with our iRacing setups whether you’re a pro that’s been racing in Porsche Cups for generations or a gentleman driver just starting out in the discipline.
Porsche’s Car Characteristics
The Porsche Cup cars generally have a very similar formula: a cheaper GT3 without the radical aerodynamics and trick electronics of the fastest tin-tops out there. They’re ideal for the gentleman driver, providing drivers with a challenge whilst also being rewarding and driveable when pushed to the very limit.
As with all Porsche 911s, the 992.2 Cup boasts a flat-6 mounted in the rear of the car. This means that you need to get up to speed with weight transfer quickly, especially if you haven’t driven a Porsche GT car in anger before. Even if you have driven something like the GT3s or GTEs, there is still an element of difference as the Cup car only has more rudimentary driver aids compared to the top-tier cars in order to keep costs down!

Steering and Cornering
One of the first things you’ll notice when you start to turn a Porsche Cup car in anger is how pronounced the rear-engined layout is. Whilst the Cup car can be quite forgiving, given that it is designed to be enjoyed by the gentleman driver as well as the pros, when you start to push the car closer to the edge of grip you will find it is quite easy to cross the line. This is especially the case if your experience is only with front-engined cars too, as the heavy rear engine swinging around can be like a pendulum if you haven’t tried it before.
This generation of Porsche Cup is more forgiving than the last, however. This is thanks to the addition of electronic driver aids for the 992.2 generation, something that has always been an optional extra for the Porsche Cup cars but is often not fully exercised. The Traction Control allows you to push closer to the edge without spinning, whilst the ABS prevents understeer from front-end lockups and the snap of rear-end lockups.
Aerodynamics and Bodywork
As a rear-engined car with rear-wheel-drive, the Porsche 911 Cup cars have always had to have a fine aerodynamic and weight balance. It’s a type of car that rewards smooth driving, carrying as much speed as possible through the corner without spinning out or going straight on. Most front-engined GT cars, in comparison, reward an aggressive driving style with a sharp turn-in and a lower apex speed.
Whilst the latest Porsche Cup will be a familiar feel for those experienced with the car class, it has been enhanced and adapted further. Some elements were redesigned to save running costs and to improve efficiency, allowing damaged elements to be replaced easily without changing a whole end of the car or to prevent further mechanical damage after contact.
Other parts have been designed with better aerodynamics, heating, and cooling in mind. These include the louvres. And then the rear end of the 992.2 Cup is almost entirely new, with a wing that reflects the latest aerodynamic developments in GT racing and a reshape that means that the airflow over the back is more consistent. Expect the grip to last longer through faster corners than in the previous generation.

Power Delivery and Braking
Much like its predecessors, and much like with other elements of the 992.2 Cup car, the key principles of this generation are similar in characteristic. The car is set up to reward the driver who is smoother and aims to carry more speed through the corner than their rivals. That means trying to avoid standing on the brake pedal whilst trying to trail-brake, and trying to keep a wider line through the corner to carry more speed through the apex.
Whilst there are general upgrades to the 992.2 Cup that add more horses to the engine and more power to the brakes, it is also in this element where the new-for-2026 driver aids are going to be felt more. Even on their lowest settings, the Traction Control allows you to fling the car into 90-degree corners without it immediately spinning out from under you, whilst the Anti-Lock Braking System will allow you to slam on the brakes a little bit harder provided that the surface is somewhat flat and you don’t hit a bump in the process.
