The Ultimate RENNSPORT Controller Settings

Get to grips on RENNSPORT quickly with this handy controller guide.

RENNSPORT’s full release is just around the corner, with the sim launching on Console as well as on PC.

You can expect that sim racers will be competing through every mode of controller on Console, and from mouse and keyboard all the way up to a full motion sim rig on PC.

For this particular article, as the Console launch is very soon, we’ll look at the ultimate controller settings for RENNSPORT and how you could make the most out of your gamepad.

The Different Controller Settings

Before configuring the various controller settings, it is helpful to understand what each of the available settings represents.

Sensitivity: This refers to how the game responds to your inputs on the controller. A sensitivity of 1 is linear, meaning that the percentage of input on the controller will be the same as the output in-game. A lower sensitivity means that the in-game output will be lower than the input that you’re putting in on the controller, whilst a higher sensitivity will mean the in-game output will be higher.

Deadzone: This is how much of the input on the controller is ignored in-game. You may choose to use this if you have stick drift, as it means that the car won’t tend to steer slightly to one side or always have a pedal slightly pressed.

Smoothing: Think of this as a delay between your input and your output. Higher smoothing means that it will take longer for the in-game output to match your input level, which can be helpful if you are aggressive on your inputs.

Speed Sensitive Smoothing: This is an increase to your smoothing depending on how fast you are going. If you are finding that you are oversteering or understeering more at high speeds, you will want to adjust this setting.

Speed Sensitive Steering: This setting is a multiplier on your steering input, much like the Speed Sensitive Smoothing setting. It adjusts the steering curve depending on the speed you are going at, allowing you to have a sharp turn-in at tighter and slower corners whilst being able to carry speed gently through faster, more open corners.

Steering Range: This is the range of input from your controller that the sim accepts values up to. 1.00 means it accepts a full range of inputs; lower values cut off the values further away from the centre. This can be useful if your controller has a deadzone at the far ends of its range.

Control Bindings: This refers to the button assignments for various car functions on the controller itself, such as ignition, shifting gears up or down, the pit speed limiter, etc.

The Default Controller Settings

The default settings are not poor by any means. They’re designed to work with any controller that’s on the market today, from the top-of-the-line controllers with rumble motors on the triggers and sticks that allow micrometre precision to decades-old technology with no vibrations, buttons for triggers, and analogue sticks that may as well be buttons with the lack of range that they have.

They certainly work as a starting point, but you may find quickly that it’s too restrictive or not restrictive enough.

The default controller settings look like this:

  • Steering Sensitivity: 0.78
  • Steering Deadzone: 0.01
  • Steering Smoothing: 0.10
  • Speed Sensitive Smoothing: 0.10
  • Speed Sensitive Steering: 0.96
  • Steering Range: 1.00
  • Throttle Sensitivity: 0.65
  • Throttle Deadzone: 0.01
  • Throttle Smoothing: 0
  • Brake Sensitivity: 0.65
  • Brake Deadzone: 0.01
  • Brake Smoothing: 0
  • Clutch Sensitivity: 1.00
  • Clutch Deadzone: 0
  • Clutch Smoothing: 0.25
  • Handbrake Sensitivity: 1.00
  • Handbrake Deadzone: 0
  • Handbrake Smoothing: 0.25

Our Recommended RENNSPORT Controller Settings:

The ideal controller settings for any given driver are entirely subjective. What may work for one racer may not work for another. These settings are designed to work well with most cars, be they front-engined front-wheel-drive TCRs or the rear-engined rear-wheel-drive Porsche 911 GT3 range.

You may find that you wish to fine-tune by car, reducing understeer in some and reducing the oversteer of others. Or you may choose to increase brake smoothing to prevent lockups in cars that do not have ABS, and increase throttle smoothing in cars that do not have Traction Control.

Our recommendations are as follows:

  • Steering Sensitivity: 0.2
  • Steering Deadzone: 0.01
  • Steering Smoothing: 0.02
  • Speed Sensitive Smoothing: 0.04
  • Speed Sensitive Steering: 0.67
  • Steering Range: 1.00
  • Throttle Sensitivity: 0.51
  • Throttle Deadzone: 0.01
  • Throttle Smoothing: 0
  • Brake Sensitivity: 0.51
  • Brake Deadzone: 0.01
  • Brake Smoothing: 0.10
  • Clutch Sensitivity: 1.00
  • Clutch Deadzone: 0
  • Clutch Smoothing: 0.25
  • Handbrake Sensitivity: 1.00
  • Handbrake Deadzone: 0
  • Handbrake Smoothing: 0.25
