Under the Hood: Tips and Tricks to Driving ACC’s Porsche 911 GT2 RS CS Evo

One of the best handling cars in ACC’s GT2 Pack DLC, let’s learn more about the Porsche 911 GT2 RS CS Evo.

Although the real-world GT2 series faces low race entries compared to the GT World Challenge Europe, GT2 cars are spectacular to drive. With top speeds soaring close to 300 km/h, these machines are the epitome of automotive performance, offering an adrenaline-fueled experience like no other.

With the new GT2 Pack DLC for Assetto Corsa Competizione, you can now experience six GT2s, including the Porsche 911 GT2 RS CS Evo, which we are going to dive under the hood of.

Introducing the Porsche 911 GT2 RS CS Evo

In 2018, Porsche was the first manufacturer to join the new SRO GT2 category with the Porsche 911 GT2 RS CS. The car has since participated in events such as the GT Sports Club America and the GT2 European Series.

Porsche unveiled the GT2 RS CS Evo in 2023, enhancing performance for track days and racing series. The Evo kit upgrades improve efficiency and performance over longer races, including extensive optimisations in aerodynamics, redesigned wheels, modified shock absorbers and enhanced safety features.

While GT3 variants of Porsche 911 prioritise a high-revving naturally aspirated engine for balanced performance and grip, GT2 models use turbocharged engines, offering a more aggressive driving experience. The 911 GT2 RS CS Evo has a twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre flat-six engine derived from the acclaimed 911 Turbo S sports car.

The Basic Car Characteristics

The Porsche 911 GT2 RS CS Evo is a powerhouse of performance. This car boasts a 700 horsepower twin-turbo six-cylinder engine and a dry weight approaching 1,400 kilograms. While not the most balanced or versatile option, the Porsche GT2 delivers sheer driving enjoyment. Its rear-end dynamics provide a thrilling experience, making it the top choice for pure fun. It’s fast, agile and everything you would expect from a Porsche.

The increased power in the Porsche GT2 is achieved through several enhancements, including larger turbochargers, a redesigned carbon fibre air inlet, an upgraded filter and a free-flowing exhaust.

Steering and Cornering

The Porsche GT2 offers a challenging yet enjoyable driving experience, typical of Porsche’s rear-engine layout. The rear end tends to kick out, requiring skilful throttle control, but the car has rewarding handling. Besides that, the Porsche GT2 offers remarkable lateral grip and the steering is responsive and provides exceptional feedback.

The car displays predictable behaviour as it nears its performance limits. While it may exhibit understeer when entering slow corners too fast and oversteer when the throttle is applied early, it maintains surprisingly approachable considering immense speed and power.

The suspension setup of the GT2 RS CS Evo resembles other Porsche racing cars in Assetto Corsa Competizione. You can tune the setup with the ride height, camber, caster, toe, and front and rear anti-roll bars just like in a GT3 car, although to a slightly simplified level.

Power Delivery and Braking

Despite being exclusively rear-wheel drive, the Porsche GT2 has strong traction and smooth power delivery out of corners. With the engine positioned over the rear axle, the weight distribution ensures optimal grip by firmly pressing wide rear tyres onto the road.

The engine of the Porsche GT2 is very responsive and its power delivery has no noticeable turbo lag. Although all GT2 class cars are extremely powerful, the Porsche’s acceleration is particularly potent and it is easy to hit the rev limiter on twisty circuits because of the short gears 1 and 2.

Meanwhile, on the brakes, the Porsche GT2 allows for aggressive cornering, with the ability to stabilise the car using trail braking. As you reach the corner exit, the car’s brilliant traction enables it to accelerate quickly after passing the apex.

Aerodynamics and Bodywork

The Evo version of the Porsche GT2 introduces extensive aerodynamic enhancements focused on improving downforce and balance. Changes include a new apron with revised air intakes for brake cooling, a centrally-mounted radiator and a redesigned front splitter to increase downforce on the front axle. Broader front and rear fenders accommodate wider rims, while a higher Gurney flap on the rear wing further improves aerodynamic balance.

The Evo aero package also includes new air outlets in the rear apron to enhance ventilation for the rear brakes and engine compartment, reducing thermal stress on components, particularly in high-temperature conditions, which could come in handy if you’re taking the Porsche GT2 out for 12 or 24-hour races. Adjustments to the dampers also contribute to decreased tyre wear during races, allowing for more consistent lap times.

The aero setup in the simulator is limited to the rear wing angle and front and rear ride height. Adding more drag can significantly impact the straight-line performance of this car because it reaches higher top speeds than the Porsche GT3.

Final Thoughts

While each car in the GT2 pack offers unique characteristics and strengths, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS CS Evo is one of the best choices for those prioritising pure driving pleasure. It promises endless excitement on the track with a powerful engine and dynamic handling.
