The Playstation 5 is an amazing next-gen console that packs some serious horsepower when compared to its predecessors. Sony continues to push the limits in the console gaming world, which bodes well for Sim Racers, as the additional computing power equates to improved gameplay that narrows the gap between the real world and the virtual world.
With sim racing, it’s critical that a quality steering wheel and the pedal combination are used in order to feel what’s going on with the car so that you can control it properly. For this reason, it’s important to ensure that you get the best wheel that you can afford that works with your console.
There are so many quality wheels on the market today that can make it very difficult to decide on what’s the best and to be honest, there isn’t an all-out winner as a “winner” will be highly subjective to the user. For these reasons we’ve selected several products that we believe are fantastic contenders that will deliver the best experience for you and your PS5. The following is a carefully curated list of a variety of high-quality wheels, that will match the performance that you’d expect from your PS5 and favourite sim.
This is undeniably the best Thrustmaster wheel in their lineup and one of the smoothest wheels on the market in regards to force feedback delivery. Thrustmaster collaborated with Polyphony who are the developers of the Gran Turismo franchise for the Sony Playstation. It only makes sense to include this wheel as it’s directly targeted at Gran Turismo drivers. There are several features of the Thrustmaster T-GT wheel that Playstation 5 owners will benefit from.
The T-GT wheel features T-DFB that adds an extra dimension of force feedback to the wheel by adding suspension and vibration effects, transmitted through the steering column, improving your immersion and lap times by knowing exactly what your car is doing while driving. This feature is exclusive to Gran Turismo Sport but the T-GT will perform brilliantly in other sims as well.
The 40-Watt brushless motor provides powerful and linear force feedback that is the best short of a direct drive wheel. The rim that’s included with the T-GT features a variety of switches, rotary knobs, and a pair of thumbsticks that allow you to perform tasks such as custom livery design or photo mode without the need of the controller.
The T-GT also features 1080 degrees of rotation and a detachable leather-wrapped steering wheel.
The accompanying T3PA pedals naturally match the quality of the wheelbase and deliver in both the looks and performance department. Built from quality aluminium, the pedals feature adjustable pressure settings and a range of physical adjustments, in terms of spacing, angle, and height for the accelerator. The brake pedal is not a load cell unit, but the Thrustmaster conical rubber brake mod does a good job of improving the brake pedal feel.
Thrustmaster does have some very good pedals in their lineup, but the addition of a loadcell-equipped kit would definitely drive the price up considerably. The T3PA pedals and T-GT wheel are definitely more than capable for all but the most discerning sim racer and will make a great addition to your PS5.
Fanatec CSL Elite Wheelbase
The Fantatec CSL Elite wheelbase is the “entry-level” product in the Fanatec lineup but don’t let that title fool you into thinking that it sacrifices performance or quality for a lower entry price point. The CSL Elite uses a powerful motor, electronics, and power supply that was borrowed from the more expensive Clubsport V2.5 Wheelbase that drives a single belt that allows the driver to experience detail coupled with strong force feedback.
There are many rims that can be coupled with the CSL Elite wheelbase from Fanatec, but the BMW GT2 wheel makes the most sense. The replica of the BMW touring car wheel offers a pair of analogue joysticks that make navigating menus a breeze, as well as a built-in LED display and rev counter, with the rim wrapped in genuine Alcantara. If this rim isn’t your cup of tea, there are a host of other rims that can be used with the CSL Elite wheelbase.
The pedals that match with this package are the CSL Elite that can be equipped with a loadcell for an additional cost or without. The base, pedals, and arms are fabricated from aluminium that gives the entry-level pedals feel like a premium offering. The pedals use potentiometer sensors and metal gears that deliver accurate inputs from the throttle and brake pedals, which are also adjustable in their positioning.
The Fanatec CSL Elite is a very solid performer that lets you enjoy quality equipment without the astronomical price tag.
Logitech has been producing racing wheels for a long time. Many famous sim racers started out racing on the famous G29 wheel as it was one of the only options back in the day for aspiring sim racers. As the years moved on and technology improved, Logitech has been able to improve their products while targeting a niche segment where new sim racers are ready to take racing more seriously.
That isn’t to say that The G923 is an entry-level wheel where sacrifices have been made to the hardware. The G923 is a very capable wheel that features the new Logitech True Force, that allows you to feel more detail in the road surface and vehicle dynamics, which improves your ability to respond to changes in on-track conditions and adjust your driving style, which results in the potential for more consistent and quicker laps.
The G923 features a leather-wrapped rim with an anodized aluminium centre marker and rim-mounted shifter paddles. The face of the rim features all of the buttons that you’d normally find on a wheel such as a directional pad, four analogue buttons, a large rotary wheel, and bumper buttons. The wheelbase is gear-driven, which is not as quiet or smooth as a belt-driven unit. This choice keeps the cost of the G923 down, but the performance of the wheel is still very good and delivers a great experience, especially when you use the Launch Control and Dual Clutch features of the G923 to enhance your racing.
The pedals of the G923 features a brake pedal that now has a progressive spring that improves brake pedal feel and allows for proper trail braking, a feature that was omitted on the preceding G920.
The Logitech G923 is a great entry for anyone that’s ready to step out of the arcade racing world and dive into the serious sim racing world. The G923 package is definitely difficult to beat in terms of bang for your buck.
If you thought the T-GT wheel was impressive but a little out of reach then the T300 RS GT is the wheel for you. Like the T-GT, the T300RS GT is licensed by Gran Turismo and while it doesn’t feature the T-DFB of the T-GT, or the control options such as dual analogue sticks, the wheel has all the right moves where it counts.
A large brushless motor and dual-drive belt system deliver silky-smooth force feedback and 1080 degrees of rotation to the leather-wrapped rim. Aluminum paddle shifters come with a detachable rim that allows you to swap it out for another rim within the Thrustmaster ecosystem.
The T300 RS GT system comes equipped with the same T3PA pedals that the flagship T-GT wheel comes with. This means that you can also install the Thrustmaster conical brake mod that improves pedal feel and assists in trail braking similar to a load cell. In addition to the rim flexibility, you can also add a Thrustmaster H-pattern shifter to your kit
The T300 RS GT Edition is a great wheel and no sacrifices have been made to ensure that your sim racing experience is the best it can be. The rest is up to you and your skill to snag that coveted podium position.
